the BLARE Foundation March Newsletter

Dear BLARE Foundation Community,

As we step into March, we reflect on the incredible people who have shaped our foundation’s journey. Every initiative we undertake is made possible by the dedication and passion of those who believe in our mission. This month, we are proud to spotlight David Macknin, whose support and insight have been instrumental in helping the BLARE Foundation grow.

Spotlight on David Macknin: A Trusted Advisor and Advocate

David Macknin has been connected with the BLARE Foundation since before its official launch. His journey with us started with a simple cup of coffee and a croissant at Leonidas, where Blair reached out to pick his brain about nonprofit development. With years of experience in the nonprofit space, David provided crucial advice about the challenges of starting a foundation—emphasizing the importance of taking small, intentional steps in a competitive landscape.

David attended our first-ever gathering in Buffalo Grove nearly three years ago, where he connected the foundation with Jeff Korman, the creator of our event t-shirts. Since then, he has been a consistent supporter, offering strategic insights and participating in key events like our first charity walk last year.

His connection to Blair began through their synagogue, where he quickly recognized her leadership, enthusiasm, and unwavering determination. David was inspired by Blair’s passion for making a difference. He describes her approach as a "full steam ahead, damn the torpedoes" mentality, one that has fueled the foundation’s mission from day one.

David believes that a pivotal next step for the BLARE Foundation is to bring in a well-known advocate—whether an entertainer, athlete, or public figure—to help amplify our mission. His continued guidance and dedication are invaluable to our growth.

Beyond his contributions to the foundation, David is a proud father to his 22-year-old daughter, who is a senior at Northwestern University. He runs a successful consulting business, ChicagoRisk.net, and shares his life with his partner, Hope. He is an active community champion, serving as a Director, Officer and/or Volunteer with The Magnificent Mile Association and its Foundation, the CJE, All*Stars Project Of Chicago, The Help Project, and also is an Honors Entrepreneurship ‘volun-teacher’ at Highland Park High School. We are incredibly grateful for David’s belief in our mission and his role in shaping our journey.

Give the gift of Communication

A 22-year-old non-vocal woman in our community is transitioning into the workplace and needs your help! Please contact the BLARE Foundation at 847-507-5605 or Carolyn Hoffer at True North at 847-903-6747 if you or anyone that you know is willing to donate an iPad 3rd generation or newer with the WordChat program or that has the ability to download the WordChat program. Your donation can empower her with a voice, confidence, and independence.
